The New York Rangers and GM Chris Drury could augment their forward group in free agency, if they look to their own Metropolitan Division rivals, the Washington Capitals. With multiple UFAs available, including Taylor Raddysh and Andrew Mangiapane.
The New York Rangers have attempted to find a comparable winger to Pavel Buchnevich in free agency, and just haven't been able to find some who could replace his production. Reilly Smith was the latest experiment that fell flat on its face as GM Chris Drury gave up draft capital for the underachieving winger.
Others, such as Jack Roslovic, Blake Wheeler, and Frank Vatrano, were given a shot after Buchenevich embedded himself deep into the Blues organization. You have to wonder who would be a viable replacement at this moment?
With Vatrano staying in Anaheim, the Rangers will have to look elsewhere for wingers who could have an impact on the scale that Buchnevich had.
Smith, albeit he didn't play great, would still play a solid defensive game in addition to contributing as a depth scorer.
Who could the Rangers find in July to augment the lineup?
Andrew Mangiapane, Washington Capitals
Mangiapane is a pending UFA and has played this past season in Washington after being a breakout player in Calgary.
He's played mainly as a depth scorer in Washington after arriving from Calgary, playing a meager 13:02 TOI, and scoring 28 points (14-14) in 81 games.
Mangiapane and his linemates were more than capable of being great forecheckers, as Taylor Raddysh and Lars Eller's stats paint a great picture:
While playing on a line with Lars Eller and Taylor Raddysh, the trio posted a 65 xG%, according to NaturalStatTrick. Out of all Capitals' lines that played a minimum of 100 minutes together, this was the best mark.
Anthony Mantha, Calgary Flames
Anthony Mantha would be a solid checking winger for the Rangers to add to the lineup. This season with the Flames, he'd play a total of 7 points (4-3) in 13 games. His XG% at 55.22.
He'd be a capable addition to the 3rd-line here in New York to help control play on the ice and maintain puck possession. Though the question remains about his health after dealing with a torn ACL.
Mantha's experience on the power-play could make him a sneaky addition at a lower cost.
Taylor Raddysh, Washington Capitals
Given how well we've seen him perform with the Capitals, Raddysh could be a good replacement for Smith on the bottom-six. Raddysh posted a 54.11 XG%. At 6'3", 200 pounds, he checks many of GM Chris Drury's boxes, as a winger with some size to occupy space on the ice.
This season he played 80 games and scored 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists).
Gabe Perreault, New York Rangers
Perreault would be an easy shoo-in for a spot in the bottom-six. He's still a developing winger in the NHL, and despite coming away without scoring in his first stint in the big time, the Rangers were in disarray by the time he found himself in the lineup. Depending on how Mike Sullivan wants to use him, he could find himself as a bottom-six, poised for growth.
