Elliotte Friedman reveals shocking detail in the New York Rangers acquiring Will Borgen from the Kraken

NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman reported today that Will Borgen was on the hunt for a new home before the trade to the New York Rangers. He was seeing a decrease in utilization by Dan Byslma.

The Seattle Kraken and Will Borgen were reportedly on the outs prior to the trade which sent him to New York, and Kaapo Kakko to the Kraken.

Since then, both players have found new roles and fresh starts with their respective teams.

Borgen's found a new partner on the 2nd pairing, with K'Andre Miller, and has produced 20 blocks, and 9 SOG, with 18:75 TOI with the Rangers.

He's scored 2 points( 1 G, 1 A ) in 33 games this season split between the Kraken and the Rangers.

Since joining the Rangers, Borgen's minute averages went from 15:12 to 18:37, a significant increase.

Thanks to GM Chris Drury not only did he get his wish, his responsibility has increased, and could play his way into an extension in New York.

«Will Borgen wasn't playing, I think he wanted to be traded,» Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said. «He got his wish, he went to New York.»

To Trade or To Extend?

Now, looking ahead the Rangers will need to decide whether they keep him and extend him past July 1st, 2025 or deal him to an interested party.

«The Rangers have gotten some strong games out of Will Borgen, another pending UFA who came from the Kraken in the Kakko trade, and Borgen would be a decent option to extend beyond this season if he'd be willing to take third-pair minutes in 2025-26,» Arthur Staple of The Athletic wrote. «That too seems unlikely, so Borgen is another possible trade piece before the March 7 deadline.»

Could the Canucks be one of the many teams interested in the defenseman who found a new purpose in the Rangers lineup?

Borgen could help the Rangers acquire some assets for a quick re-tool and would be an affordable rental for teams needing defensive depth.

He currently makes $2.7 Million AAV and if GM Chris Drury feels he's been a great investment, perhaps he could stick around.
