Eagles handed major blow ahead of Super Bowl as history set to repeat itself - suong

The New Orleans Saints plan to meet with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore after Super Bowl LIX, potentially causing an immediate roster shake-up for the NFC champions just days after the biggest game of the year.

The Saints are looking to replace Dennis Allen after an underwhelming 2024 campaign, and all signs point to Moore as the frontrunner for the job. The timing of the interview is both strategic and ironic. With Super Bowl LIX scheduled for Feb 9 in New Orleans, Moore could win or lose the big game, only to remain in the city and begin planning to play more consistently at the Caesars Superdome. NFL insiders have noted that this is the first official window the Saints have to speak with Moore, aligning with the league's strict hiring protocols for coaches still in postseason contention

For Moore, the chance to coach the Saints would give the long-tenured offensive coordinator his first head coaching position in the NFL. For the Eagles, the organization has become accustomed to seeing its coaching staff get poached after each of its last two Super Bowl appearances.

After the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, offensive coordinator Frank Reich left to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and was replaced by Mike Groh. In 2022, history repeated itself when offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon departed for head coaching jobs immediately after Philadelphia's Super Bowl loss.

Moore's coaching journey started after he transitioned from a five-year playing career. He played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2015 to 2017 before joining the team's coaching staff as a quarterbacks coach in 2018. His success in this role led to his promotion to offensive coordinator in 2019, where he saw on-field statistical success and built camaraderie with quarterback Dak Prescott.

Under his leadership, the Cowboys unfailingly ranked among the league's top offenses, though differences with head coach Mike McCarthy led to butting heads and his departure after the 2022 season. He then took on the offensive coordinator role with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023, but despite developing one of the most efficient versions of Justin Herbert, his single year with the franchise resulted in a 5-12 record.

In 2024, Moore landed with the Cowboys-rival Eagles, where he helped guide the franchise to a top-10 performance offensive team in the NFL. The Eagles put up 55 points against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Conference title game, which was the most of any team in league history for that game.

Before the Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer, the organization interviewed Moore virtually, and he was expected to be a frontrunner for the position, according to the team's own website. Should Moore take the Saints' job, he will inherit an offense ranked 21 in production across the league. New Orleans's 5-12 record featured a seven-game losing streak after falling to Moore's Eagles in week 3. The Saints ended the season with one win in their final seven games.
