Details of How New England Lost Out on Starting Left Tackle Revealed

The New England Patriots were serious about wanting to make their offensive line better this off-season.

The team added offensive tackle Morgan Moses and center Garrett Bradbury to be the immediate starters at right tackle and center, respectively. They even brought in Wes Schweitzer to come in and contend for the starting right guard position.

While they know these new additions will help, the team isn’t confident enough to say that their passing and rushing offense will improve as a result. One potential spot left to address this offseason is at the left tackle position.

The Patriots had the league's worst passing offense as the offensive line gave up 52 sacks, tied for fifth most in the league.

The Patriots tried to settle that position with the potential addition of former Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle and Outland Trophy winner Cam Robinson. While they had hopes of signing Robinson with the Patriots being one of the final teams to sign with, Robinson chose to sign with the Houston Texans.Minnesota Vikings tackle Cam Robinson (74)

Robinson and the Texans agreed to a one-year, $12 million deal. He was reportedly asking the Patriots to pay him a maximum value of $14.5 million.

Robinson likely wanted to go to a playoff-ready team rather than hope the Patriots improve from four wins to nine in one off-season.

The Patriots are still projected to start Vederian Lowe at left tackle to start the 2025 season unless they sign another player, or they make a move in the 2025 NFL Draft. Offensive tackles Joseph Noteboom, Tyron Smith, and Jedrick Wills are the current free agents who can play left tackle.

New England could select a left tackle with the No. 4 overall pick with either LSU’s Will Campbell or Missouri’s Armand Membou. They also trade back into the first round or another prospect or in the second round with the No. 38 overall pick.

There is still plenty of time in the off-season for the Patriots to decide, but a decision to protect quarterback Drake Maye’s blindside must be made.
