David Montgomery will be back on the field Saturday night in Detroit.
Dan Campbell said Monday that Montgomery will have a role in the Lions' divisional round playoff game against the Commanders after the bruising running back missed the final three games of the season with a knee injury.
Getting Montgomery back, said Campbell, "will mean a lot."
"5’s a big part of us. He’s a huge part of us. And to me, he’s a bell cow. He’s a tone-setter. He’s a catalyst. There’s a place for him here, so there will be a place for him in this game," said Campbell. "It’s going to be good to get him back."
Reuniting the dynamic duo of Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs will make the Lions even more dangerous, especially against a Commanders defense that allowed the third most rushing yards and fifth most yards per carry (4.8) in the NFL this season.
Gibbs continued to thrive in three games without Montgomery -- racking up 487 yards and six touchdowns from scrimmage-- but they're even better as a tandem to keep each other fresh.
Montgomery had 185 carries for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns before his injury, plus 36 catches for 341 yards. He was one of four players on the Lions to reach 1,000 scrimmage yards this season, an NFL record.
