Cowboys & Najee Harris Trade Rumor: Fit for Steelers RB? Dallas NFL Tracker
MAY 5 NAJEE RUMOR There seems to be a major misunderstanding from some in the national media when it comes to what the Dallas Cowboys are doing at running back ... and what they are doing with their roster in general.
There is no indication that Jerry Jones' franchise is ready to use future capital to make the Cowboys incrementally better in 2024 ... you know, the "Blow It Up/Reload'' plan that we've discussed here at length and for quite some time.
And if you think through that, it means giving up a 2025 draft asset in exchange for a trade - essentially a rental, because he's on the final year of his deal - for Pittsburgh's Najee Harris ... makes no sense.
Harris is a better and younger running back than Ezekiel Elliott at this point, and yes, Zeke has every reason to see himself as the 2024 Dallas starter now that he's re-signed here. But Najee - almost no matter the trade price, unless it's player-for-player - truly does not fit here.
Or, better said: He might fit as a player. But he does not fit the plan.
DRAFT NOTES FROM FRISCO - Another year filled with offensive fireworks and 12 regular-season wins ended only in more disappointing for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. Now, three months removed from the humiliating home playoff loss to the Packers, comes another chance to re-tool in another NFL Draft.
The latest attempt in this Day 3 of the NFL Draft? The Cowboys drafted Wake Forest cornerback Caelen Carson in the fifth round with the No. 174 overall pick. ... which means, among other things, still no new running back.
Oh, and now comes the No. 216 pick in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and the Cowboys have selected South East Missouri State wide receiver Ryan Flournoy. .. and still no new running back.
Flournoy, who ran a 4.4 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this spring, is 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds and had 118 catches for 1,823 yards and 13 touchdowns in two seasons with the Redhawks.
In Round 7 at No. 233, Dallas just took Nathan Thomas, a tackle from Louisiana-Lafayette ... with one more Round 1 pick to go.
In the wake of the playoff exit, owner Jerry Jones announced he was retaining head coach Mike McCarthy and that his team would be "all in" to improve for another postseason run in 2024. But instead, the Cowboys have endured the free-agent losses of Tyron Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Tony Pollard and Dorance Armstrong while failing to extend any of their stars' contracts, most notably Dak Prescott.
Running back? Offensive linemen? Receiver? Defensive linemen? Yes, yes and more yes.
