FRISCO — The vast search for the next Dallas Cowboys head coach has begun with a wide cast of characters. There are the sensible and NFL proven candidates who have scored interviews including Robert Saleh, Kellen Moore and Leslie Frazier along with the unusual candidates Deion Sanders and Jason Witten.
But there is one search update "target" who fits both boxes that has had some connection to the Cowboys in recent years.
Bill Belichick agreed to become the next head coach at North Carolina in December, making for a stunning twist for the veteran who though his return to the sidelines would come at the professional level.
Nonetheless, Belichick has committed to lead the ACC program next fall and beyond. However, no contract has been signed to this point, opening up speculation about his true interest in maintaining the job.
Those close to Belichick and the program are not wavering on the eight-time Super Bowl champion. In fact, his girlfriend Jordon Hudson, perhaps the individual closest to him, has spoken out against these rumors.
Hudson shared a post to her Instagram this week of the two with a caption that read: "Pictured: two people who are overtly committed to @uncfootball."
Separate rumors involving the Cowboys interest in the former New England Patriots head coach have floated since their NFC Wild Card loss to the Green Bay Packers last postseason. Midway through the 2024 season, it appeared Belichick could be a strong contender for a potential Dallas opening along with several others.
The move to the college game served as an unexpected twist before the NFL coaching carousel got going.
If Hudson's claims are true and he signs his contract to remain in Chapel Hill, then the Cowboys and others will have to make do by signing another candidate. But the longer he waits to sign his contract, the stronger the speculation grows.
