Could Gabriel Landeskog Get An AHL Conditioning Assignment Soon?

Gabriel Landeskog was again a participant at Avalanche practice on Monday. He won’t play NHL games this week but every other injured skater could be back by Sunday. Also, the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues went head-to-head in what could be a first-round series preview.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — April 8.

Colorado Hockey Now
Landeskog looked great again. He’s ramping up the intensity of his skates as the workload continues to increase. Landeskog made it through the whole practice and was very active on the ice.

The captain skated with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles over the weekend. Could he possibly get a conditioning assignment soon to get some game action before attempting an NHL comeback?

“Yeah, we’ll see,” Bednar said. “Like I said before, he’s ramped up his days on the ice, his workload in those days. Then we just kind of wait for the next day and reevaluate and see how he responds, then make a plan from there.”

Bednar was then asked to clarify that he’d like to see Landeskog play in those AHL games — not just practice. His response: “Yeah, if he gets there.”

It sounds like that would be the next big step. If Landeskog starts taking contact and then gets to a point where he’d like to test it out, the hottest ticket in the AHL would definitely belong to the Eagles. It’s crazy, at least to me, how much positivity there is around this potential return at this point. It felt like a lost cause when general manager Chris MacFarland met with the media days just ahead of the trade deadline.

In other Avalanche news, the four regulars who are injured could all be back this week. At least that’s the plan from the hopeful head coach.

Some of these latest injuries have opened the door for a new opportunity for Miles Wood. He’s taken full advantage of that while skating on a line with center Charlie Coyle.

The two of them already had a connection before Coyle was brought in at the deadline. Where exactly did that chemistry come from?

Around The NHL
Jets vs. Blues: The Winnipeg Jets ended St. Louis’ 12-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory in regulation on Monday. And in the process, they increased the likelihood that Minnesota can catch the Blues for the top wildcard seed. In that scenario, the Jets would match up against Jordan Binnington and the Blues in Round 1, and Minnesota would cross over to the other division and face the Vegas Golden Knights.

NYI Hockey Now: Marc Gatcomb had a great game in the history-making 4-1 Islanders victory over Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Sunday. He spoke about the experience in this latest piece from my colleague Russ Macias.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings’ playoff chances are slim, but they could make things interesting by defeating the Montreal Canadiens in regulation tonight. Cam Talbot is doing all he can to make a playoff push possible.
