New Coronation Street star Jacob Roberts has admitted his 'shock' at finding out his character's links to Weatherfield as he teased viewers with more about him.

Fans of the ITV soap were first introduced to Christopher 'Kit' Green during the first episode of the week on Monday (May 13). It came after Bernie Winter, played by Jane Hazlegrove, had been on a mission to track down her long-lost son Zodiac, who was adopted and had his name changed to Christopher Green not long after he was born.

Bernie was secretly carrying out her search for the child she gave away almost thirty years ago but after Gemma Winter-Brown became suspicious of her mum, she told Dev Alahan to get to the bottom of things and Bernie ended up crumbling and revealing all about Zodiac.

Later, she tracked down a man with the same name and of the right age. She pretended to be an agency cleaner so she could get into his house. However, she was caught rifling through his drawers leading to Bernie admitting why she was really there.

Kit insisted he wasn't adopted but seemed angry at Bernie when she spoke about why she'd given her son away and why she's looking for him now when her other son, Paul Foreman, is dying.

As a despondent Bernie headed home, she was quickly confronted by Gemma who asked her to explain who Christopher Green was. She lied, saying it was a former lover, and while Gemma spoke to Paul about searching for him to reunite him with her mum, Bernie was sharing the truth about Chrisotpher's adoption with Dev.

And as Bernie spoke, viewers saw the mystery man she had visited take out a jade elephant toy, exactly like the one Bernie told Dev she had bought for her son, saying his birthstone was emerald but jade was all she could afford when she gave him up.

Corrie viewers were introduced to Kit for the first time

The scenes marked Jacob's debut in Corrie and soap fans will recognise him for playing Damon Kinsella in Channel 4's Hollyoaks for six years. Speaking about how he's been getting on so far, the actor said: "It’s absolutely amazing to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. Meeting all of the cast and crew was great, it really is like one big family. It’s just a lovely environment and everyone has been really nice and welcoming. I feel like I’m at home here."

Sharing how he got the role, Jacob revealed: "I got a call just before Christmas and I submitted a self-tape. I actually put it to the back of my mind and didn’t think much of it because I think I assumed I wasn’t successful after not hearing back. Around a month later I was invited to a meeting, which was more of a casual audition, and after this was the screen tests which still had five people auditioning for the part but in the end, I got it and was delighted!"

He soon found out who Kit would be linked to and it came as a surprise. "Yeah I was very shocked because I know Bernie has already got a big family, so to be a part of that family is great but I was surprised," Jacob recalled. "I didn’t know how well I would fit in because Kit is nothing like that family, but I do think he’s been a good addition and created a new and exciting dynamic."

As for what's to come for Kit on the cobbles, Jacob teased: "Kit is working as a detective and has been brought in to try and solve the Lauren Bolton case and of course is Bernie’s secret son. I do think he is going to be a very misunderstood character at first. He’s been really hurt throughout his life and although he has a good heart, he has some deep rooted resentment with his biological mum, which will be really interesting to play out."
