Cooper Kupp Move Official as Cowboys Making Major Stat Mistake

The NFL is a game of separation at the receiver position. The more space you create, the easier the game becomes. NFL free agency: Cooper Kupp to join Seahawks after Rams release | Fox News

And even at 31 years old, Cooper Kupp still creates it at a very high level.

And that’s why the latest news that has the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones not “in the mix” to sign represents a major stat error in judgment.

Last season, Kupp averaged 3.3 yards of separation per route—better than CeeDee Lamb’s 2.9.

Now, sure, slot usage plays a role in this. The slot naturally makes separation easier, giving receivers free releases and movement at the snap to prevent defenders from getting hands on them.

But even when we strip that advantage away and filter Kupp and Lamb versus press, the numbers remain rather impressive. Cooper Kupp Shockingly Announces His Time With Rams is Over - Newsweek

Kupp vs. Press: 3.2 yards of separation.

Lamb vs. Press: 1.8 yards of separation.

And if you need even more proof, let this one sink in: Cooper Kupp was third amongst qualified receivers last year in yards of separation versus press coverage

Read that again. Even when forced to win off the line, Kupp is still one of the best in the league. Only Ladd McConkey and Demario Douglas were better.

Filter in every route and every situation Kupp ranked 20th among all qualified receivers in average yards of separation per route run last season.

That’s still ahead of Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Davante Adams, Nico Collins, Chris Godwin, and Tyreek Hill.

Now just imagine CeeDee Lamb and Cooper Kupp together.

Yes, Kupp is 31. Yes, he’s battled injuries. But that’s precisely the point.

He shouldn't cost all that much.

Can we guess? Give him $10 million guaranteed and incentivize the rest up to $20 million if that's what it takes.

If he thrives, you pay him accordingly. If not, you’re protected.

It’s simple. All the Cowboys have to do is open their eyes … and look at the separation stats.
