Connor McDavid's latest comments open a big door for the New York Rangers and Chris Drury must act fast

The New York Rangers recently re-signed Matt Rempe to a two-year deal. That move has put the Rangers in a bit of a tight spot, as they have $13.9 million in cap space for the postseason.
However, after July is done and over with and all of GM Chris Drury's machinations have been put into play, he'll have to focus on 2026.
The year when Connor McDavid and a plethora of other superstars in the NHL become UFAs.
 
After losing to the Florida Panthers for the second year in a row, he was asked about his choice to re-sign in Edmonton and wouldn't answer it outright, but:
"It's only been a couple of days since the season ended. Take some time to regroup, talk to my agent a little bit and family and all that, and make some decisions whenever that time comes. But there's no rush on anything like that."

It sounds like hesitation to me.
While McDavid is still processing the Game 6 loss to the Florida Panthers, we shouldn't expect an answer about his future in Edmonton so soon. But that may have been a deflection as well. Like most sports stars, if they want a bright future in the NHL, they have a plan and know where they're going.
Whether or not he re-signs in Edmonton is the biggest question, and it seems like Jeff Jackson, his former agent, now President of Hockey Operations, is doing everything he can in Edmonton to keep him happy, including hiring Kris Knoblauch.
While it may be a long shot, GM Chris Drury should consider stacking cap space near the end of the 2025-26 season, so when a player like McDavid does come available, when he shoots for the stars, he lands in a cloud.
It's exciting to think about the prospect of signing someone like Connor McDavid, who could change the entire face of the franchise.
But in the long run, someone like Kirill Kaprizov or Mitch Marner seems more feasible as a target here.
