In a heartwarming turn that’s as groundbreaking as it is inspiring, Below Deck Mediterranean star Captain Sandy Yawn and her wife, gospel singer and aesthetician Leah Shafer, have officially stepped into a new and joyful chapter: parenthood. The couple recently welcomed a beautiful baby into the world via reciprocal IVF — a deeply personal journey that has allowed both women to be biologically and emotionally involved in the process of creating their child.

A Love Anchored in Purpose

Captain Sandy, known for her trailblazing leadership on the high seas and fearless demeanor on reality TV, first met Leah in 2018. Their connection was instant — not just romantic but spiritual. Over the years, they have become advocates for authenticity, faith, and love without limits. In 2023, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony surrounded by close friends and family. But their greatest adventure, they both say, was yet to come.

The Journey to Parenthood

Reciprocal IVF — sometimes called co-maternity — is a fertility treatment where one partner provides the egg, and the other carries the pregnancy. It was the perfect choice for Sandy and Leah, who wanted to share the parenthood experience as equally as possible.

“We both wanted to feel a deep physical connection to our child,” Leah explained in an exclusive interview. “I provided the egg, Sandy carried our baby. It’s a true blending of our love and biology. We both created this life.”

Captain Sandy, who delivered the baby in early June, described the experience as "transformative, humbling, and miraculous." Known for commanding superyachts and navigating the toughest of storms, Sandy said nothing could have prepared her for the emotional tidal wave of holding their baby for the first time.

“I’ve faced hurricanes and high-pressure charter guests,” she said with a laugh. “But nothing compares to the vulnerability and joy of becoming a mom.”

A New Compass Point

The couple has not revealed their baby’s name yet, but they shared that the little one is healthy, thriving, and already showing signs of a strong personality. “This baby is already lifting their head and looking around like they’re ready to take on the world,” Sandy said proudly.

They also hope their story will open more hearts and minds to the possibilities of modern family-building, especially within the LGBTQ+ community.

“There are so many paths to parenthood,” said Leah. “Don’t be afraid to dream big. Science, love, and faith can work together in the most beautiful ways.”

Fans and Celebs Show Support

Social media erupted in celebration when the couple shared the news, with fans and fellow Bravo stars flooding the comments with congratulations. Bravo executive Andy Cohen posted, “This is incredible. Congratulations, moms! Wishing your family all the love in the world.”

Kate Chastain, Captain Sandy’s Below Deck colleague, added her own salty-yet-sweet remark: “There’s a new little deckhand in town — and they’ve got two amazing captains.”

A Legacy of Love

Captain Sandy and Leah are now settling into their new life as moms, filled with midnight feedings, lullabies, and the type of love that changes everything. For a woman who once battled addiction, survived a heart attack, and rose to fame in a male-dominated industry, Sandy says this may be her proudest accomplishment yet.

“This child is living proof of our love, our perseverance, and our belief in second chances,” she said.

As they chart this new course together, it’s clear that their love story — now enriched by parenthood — is far from over. In fact, it may just be beginning.
