Captain Jason Slams Wihan for Having No Accountability: "Walking a Thin Line"

How to Watch

Watch Below Deck Down Under on Mondays at 8/7c and next day on Peacock. Catch up Bravo.
Bosun Wihan Du Toit may be in hot water with Captain Jason Chambers as tension among crewmembers continues on Below Deck Down Under.

As seen in an eight-minute preview for Season 3, Episode 10, which you can watch, above, the waters are choppy when the men have a face-to-face conversation on the deck. It comes as the ongoing feud between Wihan and Chief Stew Lara Rigby continues, particularly about who was responsible for cleaning the sun deck after Episode 9’s wild foam party.

Meanwhile, the South African bosun accused of “kissing too many girls” remains at odds with deckhands Harry Van Vliet and Johnny Arvanitis regarding on-board duties, as seen in the recent clip.

What happened between Wihan and Captain Jason?
At the beginning of the preview, Wihan approaches Jason in the cockpit about the “wild mess” of the party, placing the blame at Harry’s feet for why all wasn’t cleaned by the break of day. But, more importantly to Wihan, it was the way Lara told Wihan that cleaning should not take place in front of the guests that had Wihan up in arms.

“I cannot have someone commenting stuff like that if she has no idea what’s going on on the outside,” Wihan told his boss. “I would just like to tell you, the situation that happened this morning is things that has happened in the past, too, and they’re just looking [at it] out of their perspective, and this is what happened before, as well.”

However, according to Jason, the “error” came when Wihan threw his coworkers “under the bus.” He advised the bosun to take the emotions out of the situation and be more agreeable with Lara. He told him to “own it” and reminded the bosun it was his responsibility to keep things on track.

The conversation comes one episode after Jason threatened that one would have to pack their bags if Wihan and Lara couldn’t work out their differences.

Captain Jason said as much when speaking with producers in the Episode 10 preview.

“With Wihan, I’m seeing there’s no accountability, and this is a concern,” Jason said. “Two heads of department not getting on can really bring the boat right down. On top of that, I don’t know how many times Wihan needs to be told to get his crew in line.”

He added that Wihan was “walking a thin line right now.”

In their one-on-one, as Wihan left to return to work, the ever-sound Captain reminded him to “take ownership” of his job.

“That’s the best way to actually turn this whole thing around,” he assured him.

What was Lara’s take on the drama?
Later, Captain Jason questioned Lara about her version of events. She said she had spoken up about Wihan cleaning in front of the guests that morning and touched on Wihan’s lack of accountability.

“His team should have done that last night,” said the yachtsman.

“No one was told to do that, so it didn’t get done,” the chief stew said. “He’ll just say, ‘Well, Johnny should have done it.’ You know, if something isn’t done in the interior, it ultimately is my fault because I haven’t picked up on it, and I haven’t delegated, and I haven’t done it.”

Jason wondered if he could get the phoenix out of Wihan to emerge and take control of the deckhand crew, but audiences will have to wait and see when the full episode airs Monday at 8/7c on Bravo or stream it the next day on Peacock.

In the meantime, don’t miss why Jason called the Seychelles Islands a “bucket list location” as the Below Deck Down Under voyage continues.
