Cale Makar Gets NHL’s 1st Star of the Week

   

The Colorado Avalanche’s elite defenseman keeps piling up the accolades. Cale Makar’s latest is the NHL’s First Star of the Week. It’s his second achievement of the NHL’s weekly/monthly awards.

The Calgary native earned eight points (2g, 6a) in four games to help move the Avs into the No. 3 spot in the Central Division.

He assisted on Valeri Nichushkin’s lone goal in the 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 16. The Avs’s struggling power play came alive with Makar’s two assists against the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 19. He scored two PP goals — one against the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 20 and the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 22 for a total of four power-play points for the week.

The 26-year-old is tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Zach Werenski for the lead in goals (11) among all defensemen. He leads the league’s blueliners in assists (34), points (45), power-play goals (6) and power-play points (19). He’s fourth in average time on ice with 25:21 per game.

The 6-foot tall, 187-pound defenseman earned the First Star of the Month for October and shares this week’s accolades with Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander and Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine.

Nathan MacKinnon earned the Second Star last week and had another Second Star in November. Mikko Rantanen earned the Second Star of the Week for the week ending Nov. 24 and the Second Star of the Month for November.
