Buccaneers Trade Baker Mayfield to the Detroit Lions

The expectations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have heightened ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The reason being, they just signed head coach Todd Bowles, and general manager Jason Licht to multi-year extensions.

 

This comes after they have won back-to-back NFC South titles, and made playoff runs. But with this, the Buccaneers have to show improvement and make it to more than just the Divisional Round. If that can’t happen, and the organization already showing their commitment to Bowles and Licht, that will then result in roster changes.

The major change will be at quarterback as if this is the result, they must consider trading Baker Mayfield by the NFL Trade Deadline if things appear to be going south. If Baker Mayfield is made available, it is the Detroit Lions that should be interested in trading for him.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Trade for Baker Mayfield

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a whole need to start getting younger as a roster as Baker Mayfield is 30, and Vita Vea, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin are among others also up there in age.

Luckily for the Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield has continued to play at a high level, enough so where if the Buccaneers were to trade him they would get enough back in return to start building out the team for the future. Mayfield specifically is coming off a season in which he threw for 4,685 yards and 43 touchdowns with 16 interceptions over a completion rate of 71.8%.

For the Detroit Lions, they should be fully interested in a trade for Baker Mayfield. For them, they are also in a spot where they are key contenders, and need to make sure they are doing everything possible to propel the team forward. If they start falling short of expectations it would be because of having Jared Goff under center.

 

Goff has been a good quarterback, but he is only a game-managing one, not one that can fully elevate the offense. For the Lions if they want to go all-in on making it to the Super Bowl, they need a better quarterback under center to run the offense, and that is what Baker Mayfield can provide.

With Baker Mayfield’s mobility, he can help uplift the offense a bit more from that standpoint as well with operating outside the pocket, and being able to throw on the run at a bit of a better rate. With the mentality that Mayfield plays with as well, he can fit into the culture of the Lions easier as well and be a guy that can match the intensity of a Dan Campbell-led team.

With a switch at quarterback, it should further provide a spark for the Lions, and Baker Mayfield is the ideal quarterback to bring that passion and uplift the offense further going forward over the next few seasons.
