Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski brought in a new wide receiver.
The Cleveland Browns are bringing in some reinforcements in their wide receiver corps, signing Winston Wright.
Wright went undrafted out of East Carolina. He previously spent time at West Virginia and Florida State. He appeared in 49 career games and recorded 187 receptions for 1,930 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Browns announced that he will wear No. 38.
Wright joins a wide receiver room that has opportunities available. The Browns have little certainty at the position outside of No. 1 receiver Jerry Jeudy.
Earlier in the week, the Browns parted ways with Jaelen Gill, who was a long shot to make the roster but provided depth for training camp.
Gill went undrafted last season but signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. He failed to make the 53-man roster and was later released. Gill eventually landed on the Browns’ practice squad for a stint during the 2024 season.
Browns Dealing With Significant Injuries at Receiver
The Browns are trying to navigate multiple injuries at receiver, which is essential with the team hosting a four-man quarterback competition.
David Bell was placed on the active/non-football injury list at the start of camp and Michael Woods has been limited with a hand injury.
“Mike will be out here (Friday). He’s dealing with a hand injury, but he may be,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “If he’s not out here, he’s inside getting treatment.”
In addition, Cedric Tillman — who is a likely shoe-in for the No. 2 spot — went down with a leg injury during Friday’s practice.
Stefanski said that the injuries led to the Browns signing a new receiver.
“Everything has everything to do with everything,” Stefanski said. “It’s all connected. Yes.”
Browns Still Sorting Out QB Situation
The Browns are still sorting out their quarterback situation. Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett are all competing for the starting job.
Cleveland is hoping to make a decision “sooner than later” on who will be the Week 1 starter. However, Stefanski said the team will take their time to evaluate all the passers.
“I think the big thing for me is putting our guys in a position where we can evaluate them. I think they did a great job in the spring. All four of those guys, I will continue to put them in some situations, but ultimately, we’d love to make decisions sooner than later,” Stefanski said on the first day of training camp. “I have a plan that’s in pencil, and we have to take in information every single day, take in how guys are handling certain situations, and then adjust from there. But we’ll get to those type of decisions later on.”
There are limited reps to go around, so each quarterback is looking to maximize their opportunities when they get them.
“I know whenever I get my opportunity, I got to maximize it,” Sanders said on Friday. “So that’s something you have to change in the mentality standpoint, and a mental standpoint. I just got to think about what I could do to get better. Even if I’m not getting reps , it’s no problem.”
The Browns will kick off their preseason slate on Aug. 8 against the Carolina Panthers.
