ENCINO, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Former "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Teddi Mellencamp's Encino home was the scene of an attempted burglary overnight.

Mellencamp and her family were home at the time of the attempted break-in, she told ABC News Tuesday.

"We are grateful that everyone is unharmed. While we are shaken, we are fortunate to have the latest in home security systems which scared off the intruders," Mellencamp and her estranged husband Edwin Arroyave said in a statement to ABC News. "Authorities were alerted and swiftly responded. We appreciate everyone's heightened concern in light of recent criminal activities in our area, but we are safe."

The Los Angeles Police Department said a call came in around 10:15 p.m. for a burglary with residents inside. When police officers arrived at the home, the suspected burglars had left the home without obtaining full access.

The suspects gained entry to the property possibly through the garage but did not get far before they ran off, according to the LAPD.

"Three people jumped over the gate and once they jumped over the gate they tried going through the side," Arroyave told Eyewitness News.

Surveillance video shared by Arroyave shows the suspects getting onto the property, making their way from the yard to the home.

At that point, Arroyave viewed his security cameras and dialed 911.

"They tried opening one of the office bedrooms that we have in the house and the alarm went off and they got spooked away and they left," Arroyave said.

"We were upstairs. They came in through the downstairs, so by the time that our nanny heard it first and by the time we came down they were already gone," Arroyave recalled.

Arroyave owns a home security system, and he says it worked to perfection. Police arrived within minutes, and the intruders dashed off without anything.

Arroyave says after the scare, the kids went back to bed as if nothing happened.

"You know they were able to go back to sleep because they knew that the house was secured," he said. "I think that's where the home security is a big part of feeling protected."

The suspects got away in a black BMW. The LAPD says it is looking for two males in black hooded sweatshirts.

The attempted burglary was one of two incidents that police responded to in Encino overnight. A break-in was was reported around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday along Enfield Avenue, police said.

It's unclear if anything was taken or whether the incidents are connected.

The two incidents came just hours after Encino residents gathered to voice their safety concerns following the killings of an "American Idol" executive and her husband inside their home.

More than 200 Encino residents packed the Encino Community Center Monday night in wake of last week's shocking murders.

The L.A. County district attorney revealed new details in the killings of an "American Idol" executive and her husband in their Encino home.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Hochman revealed new information in that investigation, saying that the man accused of killing Robin Kaye, a longtime music supervisor for "American Idol," and her husband, Thomas Deluca, allegedly used the couple's own gun in the shootings and then called police.

Raymond Boodarian, 22, was arrested a day after they were found dead last week.

At the town hall Monday, Los Angeles police and the district attorney answered questions from frightened residents.

"We're having phenomenal numbers on crime reduction. That being said when two wonderful people end up dead in their own home, those crime statistics fall kind of flat," LAPD Deputy Chief Marla Ciuffetelli told attendees.

LAPD said the agency has stepped up patrols throughout the night in Encino, but added the department faces challenges with staffing.

Some residents say their area is being targeted.

"The crime is out of control," Encino resident Deborah Palace told Eyewitness News. "You don't even feel safe going to sleep in your own home."

Hochman says they are going after criminals.

This time last year, there were at least 10 burglaries in the month of July across the San Fernando Valley. A majority of those incidents took place in Encino.

"Good Morning America" and ABC News contributed to this report.
