Former New York Rangers forward Blake Wheeler took to social media today to send a heartfelt message to his fans. Wheeler recently retired from the NHL after a 16-year career in the NHL that saw him suit up for the Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets, and New York Rangers.![Blake Wheeler]()
Blake Wheeler, a 16-year veteran, decided to hang up the skates after an illustrious decade and a half-plus on the ice.
Wheeler, while never winning a Stanley Cup in his career, played for competitive teams in his later years in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers.
For him, he never stopped trying to attain the ultimate prize in the league, and was once considered one of the league's top forwards.
He played 1,172 games during his tenure, scoring 943 points (321-622), and spent 13 years of his career playing in Winnipeg.
Wheeler signed a one-year contract with the Rangers for the 2023-24 season on July 1, 2023, one day after the Jets bought out the final year of his five-year, $41.25 million contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Wheeler was originally a draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes (5th overall) in 2004, and wouldn't suit up in the NHL until he arrived in Boston.
Now, he leaves the game behind with no one knowing for sure what his next steps in professional hockey will be.
The New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets will feel the emptiness of his loss. But now he's free to spend more time at home with his family, while deciding his next steps.
We imagine it won't be long until we see him in some front office somewhere in the NHL, but it wouldn't be difficult to imagine it'll be close to home, wherever that may be.
Wheeler is a Minnesota-native, and could find a home in the NCAA with the Golden Gophers hockey program, or find work with the Wild.
But we're certain he'll have no trouble finding his next journey soon.
