‘Below Deck Med’ Captain Sandy Calls On Lawyer To Help Fire Co-Stars

Captain Sandy

For years on Below Deck Mediterranean, Captain Sandy Yawn has been the person in charge. This position involves occasionally firing crew members who do wrong. She’s sent multiple people home throughout the seasons and now she’s defending her on-screen actions. Read on to find out what happened.

Captain Sandy Yawn Explains Herself

Captain Sandy recently explains her thought process behind her many on camera firings. According to her, they’ve been less about her personal opinion and more so based on what her legal team has to say.

“Every decision I’ve ever had to make, with production, going to sea, leaving the dock-in that case, drugs-I call my attorney,” Sandy said.

The reality TV star shared that the reason why she turns to her lawyer is to protect her own career. Since she is a licensed captain, having staff that do the wrong thing could put her license in jeopardy.

And if one of her crew got into legal trouble while under her supervision, a worse case scenario could  result in her getting charged for the crimes. Therefore, Yawn wants to ensure that everything going on while on her yacht is up to code.

Sandy Yawn Shares Her Biggest Termination

Captain Sandy has fired several people, to the point that it’s hard to keep track. However, there have been a few that fans will never forget.

One main termination was with Hannah Ferrier, the original Chief Stewardess for Below Deck Med. In Season 5, it was all going well until Yawn found out that Ferrier had drugs on board. It quickly became one of the most shocking moments in the franchise’s history.

Hannah didn’t have a valid prescription that could vouch for why she had them, leaving Captain Sandy no choice but to let her go.

According to the yacht leader, now that it’s been years for the two to reflect on the infamous situation, she and Hannah are actually on good terms with one another. Ferrier hasn’t returned to the show since. But she did give birth to a child and is focusing more on motherhood more than yachting.

Fans Divided Over Firing

Even if Captain Sandy was legally advised to terminate the crew members she did, people still aren’t fully onboard with the decisions.

In a Reddit thread, Below Deck Med fans discussed her past firings and the overall reaction is split down the middle. Some were convinced that she only lets people go in order to support her ego.

  • Another person agreed, saying “I think she has a bit of a power trip going on.” Others applaud her for not being too soft and doing what she needs to do to make each charter successful.
  • One fan said, “I’ve yet to see her fire someone who didn’t deserve it,” with another adding that, “There’s no time for hand holding.”
