Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin will make his long-awaited season debut on Friday, Nov. 15, head coach Jared Bednar confirmed during Sunday's media availability.
When asked about Nichushkin’s return date, Bednar responded decisively, “Friday’s the day,” as captured by Josse Montano of Guerilla Sports.
“It’s been great," Bednar said about having Nichushkin back with the rest of the team. "I think the guys are excited to get him back. Friday’s the day. We’re only two games away.”
The date aligns with the Avalanche’s upcoming home game against the Washington Capitals, scheduled for the aforementioned Nov. 15 date and coinciding with the first date Nichuskin is available to make his return.
Nichushkin’s comeback marks the end of a six-month suspension stemming from alleged substance abuse during last season’s playoffs, as reported first by Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli in May.
Following his suspension, Nichushkin entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
"The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players’ Association announced today that forward Valeri Nichushkin of the Colorado Avalanche has been placed in Stage 3 of the Player Assistance Program of the NHLPA and NHL," the NHLPA announced on May 13. "Under the terms of the joint program, Nichushkin will be suspended without pay for a minimum of six months and then will be eligible to apply for reinstatement."
Nichushkin returned to the ice on Oct. 21, as reported by Brennan Vogt. He has skated with his teammates of late ramping up his conditioning ahead of his scheduled return.
Last season, Nichushkin’s production was solid, posting 28 goals and 53 points in 54 games. Most notably, the forward is known as a pivotal member of the Avs team that went on a 2021–22 Stanley Cup-winning run, tallying 15 points in 20 postseason games.
The Avalanche have had a mediocre start to the season going 7-8-0 in the first 15 games and earning 14 points through Sunday's slate. They are fifth in the Central Division tied with the St. Louis Blues and only two points separated from the last-place Nashville Predators.
