Just after Anthony Volpe silenced the boos from his latest error with a game-tying homer in the ninth, Austin Wells’ brutal baserunning blunder ruined a chance for the Yankees to potentially steal a win before extras.
Wells, who singled after Volpe’s homer tied the game at 3-3, appeared to forget how many outs there were after advancing to second on Trent Grisham’s bunt, as he started walking back toward the dugout before getting into a rundown that ended the inning.
If Wells remained on second, the Yankees would’ve had a runner in scoring position with two outs and Paul Goldschmidt batting.

Instead, on a night when they generated just two hits across the first seven innings before four in the eighth and two more in the ninth, they went into extras against the Rays.
