On Saturday afternoon the Chicago Blackhawks made the decision to place $7.5 Million defenseman T.J. Brodie on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout, and now his fate with the New York Rangers was just confirmed by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
According to a Chicago Blackhawks analyst the organization made this decision to move forward in the next phase of their rebuild. With the promotion of younger prospects into the lineup, there will be a shift in priorities at the end of the season.

New York Rangers looking to add depth to their blueline
The New York Rangers have been searching for depth players to add to their roster since the beginning of the offseason and with Brodie hitting waivers they were given a pretty cheap option to add some depth.
Unfortunately Brodie has been struggling in a Blackhawks lineup that is inexperienced, and could be considered "green", maybe a fresh start in New York could be what the depth defenseman could use, given his poor performance in Chicago.
T.J. Brodie has only managed to play 54 games this season with the Chicago Blackhawks and tallied a total of 10 points ( 2 goals, 8 assists) and was typically found in the bottom-four of the lineup.
Elliotte Friedman confirms T.J. Brodie's fate with the Rangers
As the New York Rangers continue to reshape their roster for the 2025-26 season, it's likely that they will need be in need of a veteran defenseman, with trade talks heating up around K'Andre Miller.
However, Elliotte Friedman has just confirmed that T.J. Brodie has cleared waivers and that the Chicago Blackhawks are no able to buyout his contract:

Probably the right choice for the New York Rangers and GM Chris Drury to pass on Brodie.
